That's what happens when you're in the Four Corners.
I spent last night in Torrey, UT, one of my favorite places. It's right next to Capital Reef NP, which is much less known than Bryce Canyon or Zion, but every bit as spectacular. There are so few tourists in April. The park was almost deserted. Fine by me.
I stayed at Austin's Chuckwagon Lodge. I was in the same room I stayed in the first time, in 2007. That was in July and it was about 100 every day. This room faces west and no amount of aircon could cool it down. This time lows were in the 40s and I couldn't find the damn heater control. As Little Feat said "Cold, Cold, Cold." You'll have to imagine Lowell George singing that.
Tonight I'm in Gallup. My impression of the place is that it's poor and crime ridden. Lots of cops and pawn shops. But I just had a pretty nice plate of chicken tacos La Barraca, across the street from my Route 66 in its heyday motel. I'm one of the few white eyes in here; it's mostly Navajo families. And craft vendors make the rounds, offering their wares to the diners. Estilo mexicano!
